Executive Team Performance | 25 Years | Hundreds of Leadership Teams

The Short Story

James Carter has spent 25 years with hundreds of leadership teams doing one thing: getting executive teams to perform at a level they didn't think was possible. Not through workshops. Not through keynotes. Through immersive, high-stakes experiences that strip away the titles, the politics, and the noise - and force leadership teams to operate as they actually are, not as they pretend to be in the boardroom.

The Full Story

I've worked with hundreds of executive teams over 25 years. The presenting problem is almost always the same: smart, accomplished people who can't get out of their own way together.

Blame cultures. Silos. The CEO who's still the only one making real decisions four years into building a leadership team. Executives who agree in the room and undermine each other in the hallway. Hard truths that never get spoken because the relationship can't hold the weight of them.

I've never been able to fix any of that in a conference room.

What I've learned is that the environment has to change before the people can. Put a leadership team under real pressure - not artificial team-building pressure, but genuine stakes - and you find out who they actually are. More importantly, so do they.

I took an executive team from a $400M biomedical company into a winter survival scenario in Silverton, Colorado. Big egos. A blame culture so embedded that "I work harder than everyone else" was a badge of honor. Within hours of being in conditions where survival required genuine interdependence, none of it mattered anymore. The alignment that followed wasn't manufactured. It was earned and it stuck.

I worked with a leadership team at a $3B mining company for nine months - diagnostics, individual coaching, hard conversations - before we ever got on a plane to AlUla, Saudi Arabia. The team had been operating in silos for years, grinding each other down with negativity that had become so normalized nobody questioned it anymore. Thirty days after the retreat, their daily mindset scores had improved 209%.

That number matters because it was measured. We don't ask clients to trust that something changed. We build the measurement into the process.

I'm the author of Lost Disciplines of Leadership, forthcoming, and a co-author alongside Stephen Covey, Ken Blanchard, Deepak Chopra, and Brian Tracy. I've been featured in CNN, CNN Money, Business Insider, and Business Destinations Magazine.

Every Legendary Retreat is designed and led by me personally. That's not a marketing position - it's a structural commitment. You don't get a junior facilitator or a licensed program. You get 25 years of knowing exactly what executive teams need to confront, and how to build the experience that makes confronting it possible.

lost disciplines of leadership

James Carter's forthcoming book identifies the four disciplines that deteriorate first when leadership teams are under pressure - and what it takes to restore them. Built on 25 years of working inside executive teams at companies from $50M to $3B. Available soon.
