What is an experiential leadership retreat?

An experiential leadership retreat uses real, carefully designed experiences — not lectures or slide decks — to create paradigm shifts and new behavior in a leadership team. The experience does the teaching. People don't change because they were told something; they change because they lived it.

Experience over information

A leadership team rarely fails for lack of information. They know what good looks like. The gap is between knowing and doing — and you don't close that gap with another presentation. You close it with an experience vivid enough to shift how people feel, because feeling is what drives action. Put an unfamiliar experience next to a familiar problem and a team has conversations they'd never have in a conference room.

The three principles

Principle 01
Format follows function

This is not a vacation with activities bolted on. The location and the activities — the format — are chosen entirely to serve the desired outcome, the function. Decide the function first; the format follows.

Principle 02
Retreats are workouts

A workout has to be hard, or the time is wasted. ELR workouts are mental, emotional, sometimes physical. Teams leave exhausted, fulfilled, and changed — and they value the experience precisely because it asked something of them.

Principle 03
Growth happens in recovery

A workout tears muscle down; strength is built during recovery. The same is true here. Intentional recovery — and 30 days of reinforcement afterward — is when the change actually consolidates. Skip it and the effort is wasted.

How it differs from a normal offsite

A typical offsite
  • Starts with a venue
  • An agenda of meetings & slides
  • Success = "good discussion"
  • Ends when everyone leaves
An experiential retreat
  • Starts with one outcome
  • Experiences designed to reach it
  • Success = measured behavior change
  • Reinforced for 30 days after

Done well, an experiential leadership retreat isn't an escape from the work — it's the most concentrated form of it. The team does in a few days what months of meetings couldn't, because they're not talking about the problem. They're living the solution.
