Board retreat facilitators: how to choose the right one.

"Board retreat facilitator" covers five different kinds of help. The right one depends on whether your board needs better governance, a strategic plan, or a board and executive team that actually trust each other.

Our bias, up front. We are Legendary Retreats and we design board and board-plus-executive retreats, so we are one of the options below. Other examples are described only from their own public materials. If something is out of date, tell us.

Which kind you need

  • Board evaluation and governance practices: a governance specialist such as NACD Board Advisory Services.
  • A nonprofit board on a modest budget: a university nonprofit center or certified governance consultant.
  • A strategic plan the board will approve: a strategic planning facilitator such as Leadership Strategies or Lefko Group.
  • A board and executive team that are not on the same side: an experiential retreat designer such as Legendary Retreats.

The five kinds of board retreat facilitator

1. Governance specialists

Example: NACD Board Advisory Services (nacdonline.org)

What they do
Board assessments, in-boardroom education and facilitated discussions. NACD says its assessments are delivered by sitting directors who hold NACD certification, combining surveys, interviews, written recommendations and a facilitated discussion.
Best for
Public and private company boards that want an independent evaluation or governance education as part of the retreat.

2. Nonprofit board consultants

Example: university nonprofit centers and BoardSource-certified governance consultants

What they do
Board self-assessments, governance training and retreat facilitation for nonprofit boards. The University of Delaware's Center for Community Research and Service, for example, lists board retreat facilitation among its consulting services.
Best for
Nonprofit boards that need roles, responsibilities and fundraising expectations clarified.

3. Strategic planning facilitators

Examples: Leadership Strategies (leadstrat.com), Lefko Group (marklefko.com)

What they do
Lead structured working sessions that produce a plan. Leadership Strategies provides facilitators for strategic planning and executive retreats; Lefko Group's Mark Lefko facilitates offsites, retreats and summits, and advises CEOs and leadership teams through alignment, transitions and new-CEO integration.
Best for
A healthy board that needs a strategy agreed and documented.

4. Executive coaches and CEO advisors

Examples: executive coaching firms that run two-day retreats

What they do
Coach-led retreats built around the CEO's agenda, often followed by ongoing coaching.
Best for
Boards where the main issue is the CEO's leadership or succession.

5. Experiential retreat designers Board retreats →

Example: Legendary Retreats

What they do
Design the whole retreat around one outcome, including a shared experience that builds trust between directors and executives, then the working sessions, lodging and logistics.
Who leads
James Carter, the founder.
Best for
A board and executive team that need to work as one, for example after a merger, a contested decision or a CEO transition.
Pricing
Published: Focused $35,000 to $50,000, Signature $45,000 to $150,000, Bespoke $75,000 to $500,000+, turnkey, airfare usually excluded. Written proposal within 72 hours for Focused and Signature.

What a board retreat facilitator costs

Facilitator-only fees vary widely. Guidance from the UNC School of Government notes that a facilitator's daily fee can range up to about $2,000 for local government boards; experienced corporate facilitators charge considerably more. A turnkey retreat that includes design, facilitation, lodging and logistics is a different purchase; ours start at $35,000 for a Focused retreat. See our board retreat page for a sample two-day agenda.

Questions to ask any facilitator

  • Who will be in the room? The person who sells the engagement is not always the person who facilitates it.
  • How do you handle a director who dominates? Every board has one. A good facilitator has a plan before the retreat.
  • Will you interview directors and executives beforehand? Confidential interviews surface the real agenda.
  • What will be different 30 days later, and how will we know? If the answer is a binder, keep looking.

Questions buyers ask

Who are good board retreat facilitators?

It depends on what the board needs. For governance and board evaluation, a specialist such as NACD Board Advisory Services. For nonprofit boards, a university nonprofit center or certified governance consultant. For a strategic plan, a planning facilitator such as Leadership Strategies or Lefko Group. For a board and executive team that need to trust each other, an experiential designer such as Legendary Retreats.

How much does a board retreat facilitator cost?

Facilitator-only fees range from about $2,000 a day for public-sector boards (per UNC School of Government guidance) to considerably more for corporate boards. Turnkey board retreats that include lodging and logistics start around $35,000 with Legendary Retreats.

Should the CEO facilitate the board retreat?

Usually not. A CEO who facilitates cannot also participate candidly, and directors may hold back. An outside facilitator lets everyone, including the CEO, be a participant.

How long should a board retreat be?

One and a half to two days for most boards: enough time for one hard conversation and the decisions that follow, without losing directors to their calendars.
