A boat is your company, compressed.
On a boat, nobody can wait out a decision in a meeting. Sails need trimming, a course needs setting, and a crew that does not communicate sees the result immediately. The British Virgin Islands give that lesson the right setting: sheltered water inside the Sir Francis Drake Channel, short passages between anchorages, and evenings at anchor for the conversation the day earned.
Professional captains and crew run the boats and keep everyone safe; your team does the work. Everyone wears a flotation device, and nobody needs to know how to sail or swim. This is a format, not the product. If sailing serves your outcome, the BVI is one of the best places in the world to do it. If not, we will tell you.
A maneuver needs what is happening, who acts, when, and confirmation it landed. Ambiguity shows up at once.
No one can trim, steer and navigate alone. Functions that ignore each other at work cannot here.
When the wind shifts, the team learns who decides, how fast, and whether everyone follows.
The practical details.
When to go
December to April is the driest, steadiest and busiest season. The Atlantic hurricane season runs June to November, peaking August to October, and we plan around it.
Getting there
American Airlines flies nonstop from Miami to Beef Island (EIS) on Tortola. Many teams fly to St. Thomas (STT) in the US Virgin Islands and cross by ferry or private water taxi; there are also connections from San Juan (SJU).
How long
Five days aboard is a good length. A full week lets the crew settle and the lessons compound.
Where you stay
Aboard crewed catamarans or yachts, at anchor in a different bay each night, with a night ashore if the outcome calls for it.
A sample five-day passage
A starting point. Every retreat is built around your one outcome.
Day 1
Board in Tortola
Meet the crew, a short first sail to Norman Island, and the framing conversation at anchor.
Day 2
Into the channel
Up the Sir Francis Drake Channel to Virgin Gorda and The Baths. Each day the team takes on more of the boat.
Day 3
The open leg
A longer passage to Anegada, where planning and communication carry real weight.
Day 4
Back west
A sail to Jost Van Dyke and the debrief that turns the week into how the team wants to work.
Day 5
Decide
A morning session at anchor, one behavior per leader, then back to Tortola.
What it costs
Every retreat here follows our three tiers: Focused $35,000–$50,000, Signature $45,000–$150,000 and Bespoke $75,000 and up, turnkey for a team of roughly 5 to 12 and exclusive of air travel. Most BVI sailing retreats sit in the Signature or Bespoke range. What moves the number here: the number and size of boats, crew, season and flights. See what an executive retreat costs and the three tiers.
Straight answers
Can you run a sailing retreat for executives in the British Virgin Islands?
Yes. The BVI is one of the places we run multi-day sailing expeditions: crewed boats, sheltered passages between islands, and a facilitated debrief built into every day.
Does anyone on the team need to know how to sail?
No. Professional captains and crew run the boats and keep everyone safe. Your team learns to do the work together, which is the point.
Is a sailing retreat safe?
Yes. Everyone wears a personal flotation device, swimming is not required, and professional captains make every weather call. We plan for weather as part of the experience.
How do we get to the British Virgin Islands?
Fly nonstop from Miami to Beef Island (EIS) on Tortola, or fly to St. Thomas (STT) and cross by ferry or private water taxi. There are also connections from San Juan (SJU).
When is the best time for a sailing retreat in the BVI?
December to April. The Atlantic hurricane season runs June to November, peaking August to October.
Do we need passports?
Yes. The British Virgin Islands is a British Overseas Territory, so every traveler needs a valid passport, including US citizens.
What is included in a BVI sailing retreat?
Design, facilitation by James Carter, crewed boats with professional captains, meals aboard, activities, on-site coordination and transfers in the islands, plus a 30-day challenge with a written day-30 report. Airfare is the usual exclusion. Focused and Signature retreats come with a written proposal within 72 hours.
Who a BVI sailing retreat is for
Private retreats for CEOs and leadership teams of roughly 5 to 12, built around one outcome. We are strongest with teams that need to work as one: teams in conflict, split into camps, or newly merged. Every retreat is turnkey, and Focused and Signature retreats come with a written proposal within 72 hours.
